Our new Advanced Learning Library is not just a library, but a center for community. It is a place of diversity that represents all Wichitians. And that is what made the library's Say YASSSS event this past summer so unique and amazing. The library threw open its doors and embraced a community that is often over-looked or ignored completely. The well-attended event met with rave reviews.
However, since then, the library has faced continued backlash.
We, at the Sedgwick County Democratic Party, do not think our library should stand alone in the face of such bigotry. Currently, the library board is in the process of reviewing their event creation policy, and the board is being pressured to no longer allow events of inclusive nature pertaining to the LGBTQ community.
The board's next meeting is at the library, 711 W 2nd, on December 18th at 12pm. We would ask that our membership attend the meeting to support the board as it continues its policy of inclusion.
The library belongs to us all. We cannot give way to discrimination and injustice for any due to the discomfort felt by some.
